어느 촛불집회 참가자의 MBC PD수첩에 대한 분노
4월 29일 MBC PD수첩을 통해 방영된 광우병 보도는 충격적이었다. 저토록 위험한 미국 쇠고기를 수입하겠다니! 미국 쇠고기 수입을 재개한 정부를 이해할 수 없었으며, 나와 내 가족의 생명을 지키기 위해 어떤 방법으로던 막아야 한다고 생각했다.
그러던 중 언론을 통해 촛불집회의 소식을 들었다. 나는 피곤한 퇴근 후 촛불과 종이컵을 챙겨 길거리로 나섰다. 한달 여간의 열광적인 투쟁 중에, 나는 PD수첩 보도의 왜곡논란을 접하게 되었다. 내게 촛불을 들게 만든 PD수첩 보도가 왜곡이라니!
인터넷에 돌아다니는 컨텐츠를 접하면서도 믿을 수가 없었다. 그러나 6월 12일 미국 질병통제예방센터(CDC)가 버지니아 여성의 사인이 vCJD(인간광우병)과 무관하다는 부검결과를 내 놓았다는 17일자 조선일보 보도를 보고 허탈함과 분노에 휩싸여야만 했다.
그 후 나는 PD수첩의 보도내용을 꼼꼼히 검토했다. 숨은 그림 찾기처럼 하나하나 더해지는 왜곡보도의 증거들! 불쾌감과 배신감, 더 나아가서 분별없이 MBC PD들을 맹신했던 나 자신을 용서할 수 없었다. 오역이나 자극적 영상에 대해서는 언론중재위원회에서도 이미 지적한 바 있으나, 천지로 널린 숨은그림에서 또 하나를 찾았기에 보태려 한다.
4월29일자 방송 분 초반에 인용했던 미국 WAVY TV 뉴스의 내용이다. 오역도 오역이지만, 2분 54초짜리 뉴스를 피디들 마음대로 난도질 하더니 급기야 ‘지 맘대로 편집’에 성공했다. 해당 뉴스 전체를 자세히 보면, 방송편집이 얼마나 교묘하게 왜곡되었는지 쉽게 알 수 있다. 다음은 PD수첩에 나온 인용내용이다.
Anchor: Some people are confused, others are pretty concerned about a Portsmouth woman who may have contracted the human form of mad cow disease.
PD수첩 자막: 인간광우병에 걸렸는지 모르는 포츠머츠의 한 여성의 일로 혼란스러워하시거나 걱정하시는 분들이 많으실 것 같습니다.
Reporter: Doctors suspect that Aretha has a variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseaseor vCJD. It attacks the brain filling it with holes until it looks like a sponge.
PD수첩 자막: 의사들에 따르면 아레사는 vCJD라는 변종 크로이츠펠트 야곱병에 걸렸다고 합니다. 이병은 뇌질환으로 뇌에 스펀지처럼 구멍이 뚫리는 것입니다. 이게 바로 인간광우병입니다.
Anchor: Now, this disease has a long incubation period. So, if Aretha Franklin, if Aretha Vinson, excuse me, contracted it from a food that she ate, it is likely she ate it ten or even more years ago.
PD수첩 자막: 인간광우병은 잠복기가 깁니다. 만일 아레사가 변종 크로이츠펠트 야곱병이 맞다면 그 원인은 10년 전, 혹은 그보다 더 오래 전에 먹었던 음식 때문일 수도 있습니다.

suspect를 ‘추측 또는 추정’이 아닌 ‘걸렸다’로 오역하는 치명적 오류와 함께 소름끼치는 앞뒤 영상을 버물려 Aretha라는 여성이 무시무시한 인간광우병에 걸린 것처럼 소개하고 있다. 전체 2분 54초의 뉴스 내용 중 극히 일부분을 과장 왜곡한 데 이어, 기타 내용들을 고의로 누락함으로써 뉴스의 객관적 균형보도를 의도적으로 왜곡했다.
다음은 실제WAVY TV 뉴스 전문이다. 파란 글씨는 PD수첩에서 편집해 방송한 부분(위 내용)이고, 빨간글씨(【누락】)는 방송에서 고의로 누락된 중요부분이다. 누락시킨 이유에 대해서는 화살표(➡)를 이용해 설명하겠다.

Reporter Stephanie: I just got off the phone with the Portsmouth Health Director minutes ago. 【누락】She says there is no reason to believe that anyone in the public is at risk or should change their behaviors in any way and that includes what you eat and drink because she says they do not have a definite diagnosis.

Anchor: Robin Vinson doesn’t know how much more time they have.
Doctors SUSPECT that Aretha has a variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseaseor vCJD. It attacks the brain filling it with holes until it looks like a sponge.

It is the human form of Mad Cow Disease, which according to the CDC, has killed 200 people worldwide since 1996. Most of the deaths have been in Europe. With 164 in the U.K., 21 in France and 4 in Ireland. There have been 3 deaths in the U.S. The CDC says 2 of them contracted it while living in the U.K., the other while living in Saudi Arabia. If Aretha Vinson has it, it’s believed she would be the first contracted in the U.S. since her mother said she’s never left the country.
Mother: If she contracted this through the food, Aretha wasn’t the only one. Others now share Vinson’s fear. The Health Department tried to ease those fears on Monday.
Dr. Demetria Lindsay: We do have a very stringent regulatory process as well as the fact that we do not have the number of cases that may have been seen in animals in this country that you may have seen in some other countries.

Mother: The pain is just excruciating. I felt like there has been a part of my life ripped from me.

➡아레사의 질병을 둘러싼 논란에 있어 부검은 절대적으로 중요하다. 6월 12일 부검결과 아레사의 사인이 인간광우병과 무관하다는게 입증된 만큼 위 부분에 대한 고의 누락은 의도적 회피라고 볼 수 밖에 없다.
PD수첩의 광우병 관련 보도에 대한 왜곡 논란은 한두 가지가 아니다. 여기에 또 다른 왜곡 부분을 하나 더 덧붙였을 뿐이다. 그리고 내일 또는 이후에라도 MBC가 그토록 자랑스럽게 올려놓은 ‘다시보기 영상’을 클릭한 사람들은 분명 또다른 오류를 찾아낼 것이다.
이런 상황에서도 PD수첩은 언론중재위원회가 명령한 정정보도를 내지 않고 있다. 지금쯤 편집실 어디선가 또다른 자기합리화를 위해 저질 왜곡을 자행하고 있을지 모를 일이다. 그럴수록 PD수첩은 길거리로 나선 선량한 시민들의 촛불이 하나 둘씩 꺼지고 있다는 것을 명심해야 할 것이다.
